Using contact lenses is a modern way of correcting visual problems and helping people see better. However, these contact lenses are very delicate and require gentle handling. This way, they can last longer, prevent infection from getting into your eyes and help you see well when using them. The following tips will help you know how to take proper care of your contact lenses.

  • Before handling your contact lenses, wash and rinse your hands very well with mild soap. This removes oils and lotions which can leave a film on your lenses that will get your eyes irritated and make your vision Also, keep your hands dry with a clean towel.
  • If you are going to make use of hair spray, do so before putting in your contact lenses.
  • Keep your fingernails short and smooth so you do not damage your lenses or scratch your eye.
  • Apply all eye and facial makeup after putting in your lenses so that makeup residue will not get on your contact lenses
  • Never use tap water directly on your lenses, as this can cause an eye infection that will affect your vision. Instead, use a rewetting solution (as recommended by your doctor) to keep your eyes moist.
  • Do not place contact lenses in your mouth to rinse it.
  • Always clean your lenses and the case with a sterile solution each time you use it and let it air dry. Change the case every 3 months.
  • Only wear your contact lenses for as long as your doctor recommends their daily use.
  • Do not wear another person’s used contact lenses. This can spread infections to your eyes.
  • If your eye gets irritated, remove your contact lenses immediately and don’t use them until you have discussed with your doctor otherwise, your eyes could get infected.
  • Don’t swim with your contact lenses on. Take them out and put on swimming goggles instead before getting into the pool.
